Our interpretation

Separate investor money from customer revenue

Financing supplies money through sources such as investment or borrowing. Revenue is earned by providing goods or services to customers. Money received from selling shares does not become delivery revenue simply because the company uses it to build a larger delivery network.

Zipline's 2026 announcement combined a substantial funding round with a delivery milestone. Both help describe the company's development, but neither number alone establishes profit from a delivery or from the entire business. Keep financing, activity and financial results as separate categories when comparing companies.

A valuation expresses an assessment of the company’s value in a transaction or other context. It does not mean the same amount sits in the company’s bank account. Record valuation separately from the funds raised and annual revenue.

Our interpretation

Profit depends on which costs are deducted

Gross profit subtracts the cost of the goods or services sold from revenue. Operating profit also accounts for operating expenses such as research, selling and administration. A business can therefore report a strong gross margin while spending more overall than its revenue supports.

Parrot's 2019 results reported improved gross margin alongside an operating loss. This is not a contradiction: developing the next product and maintaining the organization also cost money. Whenever a company says it is profitable, identify the measure, the period and the activities included.

From financing to a sustainable business
Finance development and deployment
Deliver useful work
Cover necessary costs from revenue
Sustain renewal and reinvestment

This is an intended path. Financing does not guarantee later demand or profit.

Our interpretation

A profitable unit is not the whole company

Unit economics examines income and cost for a unit such as one delivery or one customer. The answer depends on the cost boundary. A calculation excluding unused capacity, customer acquisition and central development can answer a useful question without describing the finances of the whole organization.

Manna's 2026 funding announcement claims positive residential-delivery unit economics. The release does not provide enough detail about the cost boundary to establish company-wide profitability. Treat this as a company claim that prompts further questions, rather than silently converting it into an audited profit figure.

Financial measures answer different questions

Our interpretation

Timing matters as well as totals

A company may need to buy equipment before customers pay. It therefore needs available cash even when an accounting plan eventually shows a profit. Rapid growth can increase this gap because equipment, inventory and staff may need to be funded before the corresponding revenue arrives.

Dronamics' financing announcement separates investment, a grant and a future equity commitment. A commitment is not necessarily money already received. Record the type of amount, relevant period and whether it is completed or conditional; this makes ambitious funding headlines informative without making them proof of commercial success.

The idea to keep

Separate the ability to finance growth from profitable customer operations.
