What earns revenue after the aircraft sale?

Recurring revenue comes from work that continues to create value.

Our interpretation

Find a recurring customer need

Recurring revenue is income earned repeatedly under a continuing customer relationship. Examples include maintenance contracts, software subscriptions and scheduled inspections. Unlike a single aircraft sale, these arrangements create obligations throughout the period of use, so ongoing service quality becomes part of the supplier's product.

Customers do not benefit simply because a price is monthly. They need a continuing reason to pay, such as earlier fault detection, consistent reporting or reduced training effort. A subscription without recurring usefulness may be easy to sell once and difficult to renew.

Zipline’s 2022 agreement with Rwanda proposed extending an existing delivery network to government users beyond healthcare. Addressing another recurring need within an established customer relationship can be a growth path, as well as finding entirely new customers.

Our interpretation

Connect data to decisions

Software as a service, or SaaS, provides software as a continuing online service. In 2026, Percepto introduced Axion with support for data from compatible third-party aircraft and sensors. The announcement describes a software-first direction that reaches beyond buyers of the company's own hardware.

This approach can let customers explore analysis while retaining existing aircraft. Compatibility is only a starting point, however. Data quality, human review and integration into maintenance decisions determine whether the information is useful. An attractive dashboard does not by itself repair an asset or prevent downtime.

The foundation of a renewable contract
A recurring work problem
Useful information and support
Customer verifies benefit
A reason to renew

Renewal is not guaranteed. Price, quality and alternatives affect the decision.

Our interpretation

Changing the payment model has consequences

Parrot's 2026 full-year-results release described moving Pix4D away from perpetual licenses toward subscriptions. It also warned that the transition could weigh on near-term revenue. A plan for more predictable future income can therefore involve a difficult change in when revenue is earned.

Software still requires development, customer support and computing resources. Alongside contract counts, examine renewal rates and the cost of serving users. Rising subscription sales do not automatically mean rising profit, especially when each new customer needs extensive customization or manual assistance.

Our interpretation

Expand the offer or concentrate expertise

AgEagle's senseFly acquisition agreement illustrates two responses to the same market: the buyer sought a broader aircraft, sensor and software offer, while Parrot intended to focus its resources. Neither breadth nor specialization is automatically superior; the customer's task determines which combination is useful.

A durable relationship should let customers verify the results they receive. Ask whether data can be exported, which equipment is compatible and what remains accessible after termination. Clear exit arrangements help a buyer evaluate the service on continuing value rather than uncertainty about losing its own records.

The idea to keep

Look beyond the subscription mechanism to why customers would renew.

Try the idea yourself

Can you name one continuing task that would justify paying again next month?
