A strategy is not one large number. Separate what a figure counts from what has not been counted yet. Then a draft can start.
A native speaker has not reviewed this page. Read the wording as an editorial draft.
This page is a table of contents for a strategy
Use this page to start a plan for entering the aircraft market. It does not rank companies by revenue, and it does not state a future market value.
It is not investment advice or a legal opinion. Check a rule in the document that states it. The review date for this institute is 5 November 2026.
Decide which market the draft is about
The centre of this institute is small and medium drones for civilian, industrial and public work. Read parts, buyer rules, the job on the ground, daily operations and payment as one chain.
Large military aircraft and comparisons of weapon performance sit outside that centre. Defence factories and supply remain background in the existing lessons.
How the figures on this page were checked
The registration figures below were read for this entry base. They are not part of the 30 papers and 100 articles behind the lessons. Lesson claims still point at those records.
For Japan, the prose of the ministry PDF is the source. The chart has more points, but this page does not assign those points to months. Only the sentence that registrations exceeded 370,000 at the end of May 2026 is used.
For the United States, the forecast overview and the Part 107 table in the fiscal years 2026–2046 document were both read, with the matching table in the UAS compendium. Where the passages use different definitions, both are shown.
Words this page uses
- Segment
- A slice of the market by buyer or by job. It stops unlike counts from being added together.
- Market size
- How large a count is, in aircraft or in money. A registration, a shipment, a sale and a flight are different counts.
- Value chain
- The path from design and parts through manufacture, approval, sale, operation, a usable result and repeat fees.
- Entry
- Starting that work. Building an aircraft and operating a service for a customer are different ways in.
- Source needed
- A figure a draft may want, but this page has not confirmed in a public document. It is left blank on purpose.
- Forecast
- A stated view of the future. It is not a result that has already happened. If the conditions change, the figure can change.
The counts we could verify are registrations
These figures were read in public documents. None of them is a revenue total. A forecast is labelled as a forecast.
Move the table sideways to read every column.
| What was counted | Scope | Figure | Date of the figure | Source | What this figure cannot say |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Registered unmanned aircraft | Japan. Aircraft of 100 g or more. | More than 370,000 | End of May 2026 | MLIT registration overview ↗ | Not sales. Hobby and work aircraft are together. The same document says the count fell at the end of June 2025 because some three-year registrations were not renewed. It is not a world market. |
| Active Part 107 registrations | United States. Nonrecreational small unmanned aircraft, 0.55 to 55 pounds, one registration per aircraft. | 424,516 | End of 2025 | FAA Aerospace Forecast FY 2026–2046 ↗ | Not sales, and not a count of aircraft flying every day. The forecast overview says the commercial fleet was about 1.1 million at the end of 2025. The detailed table’s high column is 1,074,451 cumulative new registrations, a different definition from this active total. |
| Part 107 registry, base forecast | United States. The FAA’s base case for the active Part 107 registry. | 540,845Low case 470,039 · High case 1,491,153 | Forecast for the end of 2030 | FAA UAS compendium ↗ | A forecast, not a result. The FAA states a 5.0 percent compound annual growth rate for this base case. The high case is cumulative new registrations, not the active registry. The overview’s path to about 1.5 million by 2030 follows that high definition. |
| Registered drone operators | Europe, in the wording of the EASA sentence. Not a count of aircraft. | More than 2 million | 23 May 2025 | EASA press release ↗ | Not sales and not a count of aircraft. The release says more than two million and does not include a country table in that sentence. A third-party country table is not used here. Do not add this to the Japan or United States aircraft registrations. |
| Active registered drone flyers and operators, combined | United Kingdom. Flyer IDs and Operator IDs together. | Approximately 950,000 | Database as of 30 May 2026. CAP 3297 was first published in August 2026. | UK CAA CAP 3297 ↗ | The CAA says approximately. It also says the total consists of approximately 621,000 Flyer IDs and 330,000 Operator IDs. Do not add those parts on top of 950,000. Not sales. The CAA states a 31.9 percent increase on the previous year for this combined count. |
| Operators and groups using level 3.5 | Japan. Level 3.5, not level 4. | 152 | As of 31 January 2026, in a paper dated 23 April 2026. | MLIT paper, 23 April 2026 ↗ | Not shipments and not a split by job. The paper says other regions also fly level 3.5. It names delivery, inspection, filming and survey together, without a count for each. |
The same FAA overview gives a separate recreational base case: 1.55 million units now and about 1.62 million by 2030. Do not add that to the Part 107 active total. The compendium says the Part 107 registry grew by 24,000 aircraft during 2025, while new registrations were lower than in 2024. Its operator survey is marked preliminary.
Separate the date a rule was announced from the date it took effect
These dates were read in the MLIT paper of 23 April 2026, the type-certificate press release, and the FAA compendium. Promulgation, effectiveness and issuance are different.
| Place | Rule | Announced | Effective or issued | Source | What this date is not |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Japan | Permission for defined airspace and methods of flight | 2015-09 | 2015-12 | MLIT paper ↗ | Not today’s permission for one particular flight. |
| Japan | Owner registration, a registration mark, and Remote ID in principle. The threshold moved from 200 g to 100 g. | 2020-06 | 2022-06-20 | MLIT paper ↗ | Not the May 2026 registration count, and not a type certificate. |
| Japan | Aircraft certification and a pilot licence. The paper says level 4 needs Class I, a first-class licence, and permission for the flight. | 2021-06 | 2022-12-05 | MLIT paper ↗ | Not the date of the first type certificate, and not a flight total. |
| Japan | The first Class I type certificate, issued for an ACSL aircraft. | 2023-03-13 | The issue date, not the effective date of a new statute. | MLIT press release ↗ | Not permission for every route, and not a count of later flights. |
| United States | Registration of nonrecreational small unmanned aircraft, one per aircraft. | Source needed | 2016-04-01 | FAA compendium ↗ | Not the end-2025 active total. The announcement date is not taken from this compendium sentence. |
Separate listed level-4 examples from a national flight total
The MLIT paper of 23 April 2026 labels eight level-4 examples. Eight is the number of labeled examples. It is not a national total of flights. Flights inside each date range are not counted here. Place names stay as written in the paper.

Split the market by the job, not by a missing total
A segment here is a kind of work. The size in money or shipments is source needed until a public document for that segment is read. The lesson link explains the mechanism, not a market share.
| Job | Who buys | What to decide | Size | Next lesson |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Inspection of assets and tight spaces | Infrastructure owners and inspection firms | Whether the record can support a decision | Source needed | How can a drone inspect a place people cannot enter?Airffic Inspection ↗ |

| Imaging and broad product lines | Individuals and media teams | A wide catalogue can still be narrowed or withdrawn | Source needed | Why is component performance not enough?Airffic Aircraft ↗ |
| Delivery | Retail, meals and medical supply | Whether enough jobs sit close together to pay for the service | Source needed | How many deliveries make a service sustainable?Airffic Logistics ↗Airffic Port ↗ |

See which step of the chain you would hold
Value moves along this path. A company can hold one step and buy the others. The diagram is a reading aid, not a claim that every aircraft passes every step in this order.
Holding a later step still depends on the earlier ones. A certificate does not by itself create a paid job.
Ways of competing that already appear in the reading
These groups are examples from the 25 company profiles. They are not a ranking and they do not show who has the largest revenue.
| Pattern | What it means | Examples in this collection | Revenue share |
|---|---|---|---|
| Broad integrated aircraft | One catalogue is aimed at many jobs | DJI | Source needed |
| Enterprise and public buyers | Consumer products are narrowed or left behind | Skydio, Parrot, ACSL | Source needed |
| One difficult job | The aircraft and sensor are chosen for that job | Flyability, Liberaware, Wingtra, Yamaha Motor, XAG | Source needed |
| Sell the operation | A network, a contract and repeat work carry the value | Zipline, Wing, Amazon Prime Air, Manna, Meituan | Source needed |
| Factories and regional supply | A capacity plan is not the same thing as output | Anduril, TEKEVER, Quantum Systems, Delair, JOUAV, ideaForge, Prodrone | Source needed |
A parts percentage stays blank until two sources agree
What a company writes about its own supply is not the same as a second source confirming a percentage. The percentage stays source needed until that second source is read.
| Topic | Whose account | Date of that account | Percentage in a separate source | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A statement that battery supply was rationed | Skydio’s statement to customers. Not proof of a market share. | 2024-10-30 | Source needed | Skydio statement ↗ |
Five ways in, before a budget is invented
Pick a way in, then read the linked lessons. Each way fails for a different reason. A draft should name the way in before it names a price.
Parts, batteries and repair
Enter where the aircraft already exists and the scarce item is a battery, a spare or a repair.
Ask who controls the part, how long it takes, and what happens when that supplier stops.
Does domestic assembly guarantee a steady supply? Is a lighter aircraft also durable and repairable?Airffic Aircraft ↗
An aircraft that must pass a named approval
Enter by meeting a stated approval. Name which approval: registration, radio, type, operation or the buyer’s purchasing rule.
A factory announcement is not output. An approval is not permission to fly every route, and it is not profit.
Does certified mean you can fly anywhere?Does a larger factory automatically deliver more aircraft?Flight Institute ↗
The customer’s deliverable
Enter in the software and the work product, while another company supplies the aircraft.
The buyer is paying for a map, a finding or a completed spray, not for minutes in the air.
Does buying a drone complete the job?Can a new sensor turn one drone into any tool?Airffic Inspection ↗
A service sold by the job
Enter as the operator. The customer buys completed work rather than an aircraft.
The price only works where enough jobs sit close together and the aircraft is ready when the job is.
Should you own, lease or buy the service? How many deliveries make a service sustainable?Airffic Pilot ↗Airffic Port ↗
One country and one rule set
Enter in a single jurisdiction first. A rule that is open in one country can be closed in the next.
Read the status of the rule on its own date. An old announcement is not today’s permission.
Is a globally available drone eligible for every government buyer? How should you read news that a drone rule has changed?Flight Institute ↗
Figures a draft still needs
These rows are blank on purpose. Filling them from memory, or from an analyst summary that this page has not read, would make the draft look finished when it is not.
| Figure the draft may need | Status | How to check it next |
|---|---|---|
| World revenue in yen or dollars | Source needed | Read the definition and year inside the document before adopting a commercial total. |
| Japan shipments by job | Source needed | Neither the registration total nor the 152 level-3.5 operators is shipments by job. 152 is operators and groups as of 31 January 2026, and it is not split into delivery, inspection or other counts. |
| Global share by company | Source needed | The company table on this site is a reading map, not a ranking. |
| A yen total for Japan in 2030 | Source needed | Do not copy the United States registration forecast into Japan. |
| Latest count of Category 4 flights in Japan | Source needed | The 23 April 2026 paper lists eight examples. Eight is a count of examples, not a national total of flights. Flights inside each date range stay source needed. |
| A current share of parts from one country | Source needed | Skydio’s statement of 30 October 2024 is that company’s account. A percentage needs a separate source. |
Use the five lenses as the draft’s questions
Each lens is a question, not a separate industry. One company can sit in more than one. Write the draft only after you can answer the question in your own words.
- Production & supply Why is a good prototype not enough?
- Procurement & trust What makes an aircraft eligible?
- From flight to work What useful result does a flight deliver?
- Evidence in operation Can the system work day after day?
- Economics & revenue Where does lasting value come from?

Name the job, the buyer, the rule, the step of the chain you will hold, and the figures that are still source needed. A missing number is safer than a borrowed one.
