What happens to people’s work when flight becomes autonomous?

Automated piloting changes work, while mission decisions, exceptions and handovers still need clear responsibility.

Sir Airffic Go here. Automatic ticket gates do not remove every job at a station. Drone autonomy also changes how responsibilities are divided.

Our interpretation

Break autonomy into tasks

Flying a route, avoiding obstacles, choosing useful images and deciding whether to dispatch are different tasks. Automating one does not automatically automate the others. The word autonomous becomes more informative when it is followed by a precise description of the decisions the machine actually performs.

Skydio’s X10 launch combined capabilities such as night flight and remote operation. For a service designer, the next question is what happens when a feature is unavailable or a situation falls outside its scope. Assigning that remaining responsibility makes the operating arrangement understandable before the fleet grows.

Our interpretation

Aircraft count is not a workload measure

Porat and colleagues found very different capacities for simple health supervision and complex mission control in simulations with experienced operators. Interfaces and support tools also mattered. The result explains why a capacity number cannot be transferred into a civilian staffing rule without matching the task and conditions.

Imagine several otherwise quiet aircraft requesting attention together. Each switch requires the person to recover the relevant location, status and purpose. This example shows why average quiet time is insufficient for planning: the arrangement must also handle short periods of concentrated demand without leaving an important decision unattended.

Follow the causal connection
Automate part of flight
Identify remaining decisions
Design roles and handovers
Handle concentrated demand

Increasing aircraft count does not reduce workload unless remaining decisions are organized.

Our interpretation

Piloting can move to another location

Remote Flight Deck was introduced to hand control between local and remote pilots. That can release a person on site for other work while piloting happens elsewhere. It still depends on communication and a receiving operator. Reducing travel and removing human responsibility are therefore different kinds of change.

New York City’s 2024 DFR announcement likewise described qualified officers commanding and monitoring flights. Automatic movement toward an incident can coexist with explicit human command. The meaningful unit of analysis is the combined aircraft, software and team, because each contributes a different part of completing the job.

Our interpretation

Design how context reaches the next person

BRINC and HigherGround connected live call audio with drone video to preserve more incident context. The potential benefit is better shared information. Our interpretation also recognizes a trade-off: adding information increases the need to select and prioritize it. More feeds do not automatically mean better human decisions.

Clear roles, handover information and escalation conditions explain who acts next. Buyers can therefore compare how a system supports the moments when people must intervene, not only its automatic-flight demonstration. That design becomes especially important as multiple locations and teams begin sharing the same aircraft resources.

The idea to keep

Compare simultaneous decision demands, rather than aircraft per operator alone.

Try the idea yourself

For ten normally quiet aircraft, is responsibility clear if three exceptions arrive at the same time?
